A 'P' next to the record number shows were placer gold deposits have been found. The Reed gold mine is noted on this map. A 17 pound nugget was found in the little meadow creek in 1799 and ushered in the gold rush of the early 1800's in the CarolinasRecreational Gold panning is allowed within the National Forest.
